World’s most expensive tea bag

28 07 2010

If you think 80 quid is a lot for a caddy with a few fancy tea bags, then you surely haven’t heard about world’s most expensive tea bag. It’s only a measly £7,500, yes, exactly. Of course it’s not expensive tea that contributes to this price tag. The bag, made by Boodles jewelers to celebrate PG Tips 75th birthday, is decorated with 280 diamonds. It is also hand-crafted and took three months to complete.

Even if you can afford it, it doesn’t look like you could drink it anyway, because that makes sense, right? Nowadays you can any item luxurious by adding some diamonds, luckily I prefer my tea non-diamond-studded.

The fancy tea bag has been used to raise money for Manchester Children’s Hospital.

This month the following teas were reviewed in the Tea Colleciton

Tea Collectibles – Tea Cards

17 11 2008

PG Tips is known for its innovative ways to promote and advertise their products. While still under the name of Brooke Bond & Co they launched one of their famous campaigns in the form of collectible tea cards. The cards contained images and information about all kinds of topics – flowers, animals, technology and famous people and could be found on the bottom of the tea package. This campaign lasted for about 45 years, since the 50s until 1999 when the last farewell card was issued.

Similar cards were also issued by Typhoo Tea since the 30s throughout World War I and II.

Below you can see two Typhoo cards from Characters from Shakespeare series (1937) and Trees of the Countryside (1937) and two Brooke Bond cards from British Wildlife (1958 ) and History of Aviation (1972).

PG Tips – A history of commercials

14 10 2008

If you haven’t seen any of the PG Tips commercials yet here some of them. The first PG Tips commercial was launched in 1956, when the main characters were played by chimpanzees dressed up as humans and voiced by celebrities. Later they were exchanged for a knitted monkey – the official mascot of PG Tips since 2001 and it’s sidekick Al played by Johnny Vegas.

Personally I don’t find the monkey funny or cute and I’m not a big fan of this humour either, but both PG Tips and those commercials are very popular in Britain.

74802 Teacups on Trafalgar Square

6 10 2008

This may be old news, but hey! Last year in April the British TV programme Human Footprint along with PG Tips and some volunteers has lined up 74802 teacups on Trafalgar Square. This is the average number of teacups a person would have consumed in a lifetime. The teacups were indeed filled with tea!

PG Tips – A Tale of Two Continents

3 10 2008

A Tale of Two Continents is a spoof documentary on the history of tea by one of the Britains top tea bands PG Tips.

You can also play the Game of Two Continents here, which I thought was more exciting then the movie.
